Welcome to Memengwaa Place

Memengwaa Place is a long term residential facility providing an independent living, safe environment for Indigenous women and children who have experienced family violence.

One of two residential facilities operated by the Indigenous Women’s Healing Centre (IHWC), Memengwaa Place provides long term safe housing for seven (7) families and a live-in house mom.

This semi-furnished apartment facility accommodates residency for up to 1 year, with extensions granted based on need. Services and supports such as traditional teachings, one on one counselling and group supports are provided by the outreach/support worker to residents. Memengwaa residents can also access supports and programs such as the Children’s, Addiction and Trauma counselling services and Learning Program through the IHWC.

All Programs are delivered from an Indigenous perspective and include Indigenous peoples’ history and the use of traditional ceremonies and healing ways (Smudging, Sweats, Sundance, Fasting, Vision Quests, Medicine picking.  Elders are involved in all aspects of program delivery and service. We also respect all Indigenous world views and ways of practicing spirituality.

Memengwaa Place provides safe, affordable housing in an independent living setting to Indigenous women and their children that promotes self-sufficiency, nurturance and healing by creating supportive networks in the community

  • Protective, affordable, longer term housing promoting self sufficiency
  • Outreach and follow-up services by Indigenous Women’s Healing Centre staff for specialized programs and counselling
  • Life skill building
  • One year residency
  • Resident Circle
  • Community Healing Circle
  • Children’s Circle
  • Referrals to community resources
  • Individual counselling
  • Seven sacred and traditional teachings, including sweats, pipe, drumming, singing and feast ceremonies
  • Volunteer opportunities


Who can live at Memengwaa Place?

  • Women and their children committed to living a lifestyle free of abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, or verbal)
  • Women and their children who are in the process of healing and want to live in a cooperative, caring ,  non-violent and alcohol/drug free environment
  • Women who need a protective and supportive environment to move towards living independently in the community

 

How do I apply?

Only woman who have been residing in our long-term supportive living program can apply within to transition into our 2nd stage housing. Outside referrals are not accepted into Memengwaa
